Tegucigalpa Take 1

Jake and I went to Tegucigalpa Feb 24-26. After many months, I finally had secured an appointment at UNAH Facultad de Ciencias Medicas to present all of my documents and start the process of validating my medical license in Honduras.

Jake had just fixed the Exploder. However, when considering the quick turn-around for a single meeting, we opted for flying to Teguc. We are so thankful we made that decision. As it was, we were exhausted after the quick trip. I can only imagine adding the stress of Honduras driving for 9 hours on the front and end of that trip. Getting on our flight in La Ceiba.
That Tuesday, Feb 24, was a grey, cloudy, rainy and cool day. Which ment we were very cold in Teguc.
Landing in Teguc, view from the plane of some larger buildings.
Standing in the airport waiting for our ride and I found it so amusing that looking out the window...I could be in the US considering all the signs. L to R: Pepsi, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Church's chicken, Little Ceasar's, Circle K, Subway, Dunkin, and so on..

We were picked up by Olinda and Everardo, the parents of Dra Olinda who had completed her servicio social at Hospital Loma de Luz last year. Our first stop was Parque Estudiantil at Cerro Juana Lainez. Tegucigalpa is situated on mountain tops and in the middle of the city is a small hill which is this Cerro.
Statue of Lempiras at Cerro Juana Lainez. Lempiras was indigenous and celebrated by some, and not so celebrated by others for his role in resisting the Spanish.

Interesting story about the Honduran Flag. Ever since the National party officially took office in January of this year. They changed the official color of the Honduran flag to a deep blue from the previous turquoise blue. Depending on the Honduran you talk to you'll get a different opinion on this matter. Everything from what was the original blue? to what is the motivation behind the color changing (a.k.a. politics)?
View of the Estadio Nacional from Cerro Juana.

Another view from Cerro Juana Lainez
Our next stop was El Picacho, national park just North of the city with a view over looking Teguc.

Dinner at Coco Baleadas
After our unsuccessful meeting at UNAH in the morning, Jake and I spent the afternoon with Olinda exploring the city center. One of the first stops was of course a lovely little cafe, Cafe con Libros.

Their signature cafe con libros, delicious latte with spices
The narrow staircase up to the cafe.

Parque Central
how anyone is able to make sense of these wires...
Iglesia Santa Maria de los Dolores. I liked how you can see el Cristo del Picacho on the mountain top to the right.

Calle peatonal, city center
lunch/snack break on a rooftop
lunch/snack break on rooftop overlooking the cathedral at the parque central. Again I appreciated el Cristo del Picacho to the right.

From the city center we met up with Everardo again and we actually left the city to visit some of the small surrounding pueblitos famous for their colonial appearance. First stop was Santa Lucia.
Santa Lucia, could actually see Tegucigalpa from this vantage point.

Next stop was the pueblito, Valle de Angeles. Known for it's artisan crafts. We actually did make a few purchases.

We did have pupusas for dinner that night although this was not where we ate them.

Until next time Tegucigalpa!

Much Love.
