Estoy MD, FACS

Jake and I made a quick trip to the United States two weekends ago. It landed nicely on a holiday weekend in Honduras so I had no cases scheduled for that Thursday Oct 2 or Friday Oct 3. A visiting surgeon was at the Hospital to cover my absence, plus a visiting OB/GYN arrived that weekend and was be able to provide C-section coverage.

The American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress was taking place in Chicago. I had applied to become a fellow of the ACS earlier this year. Had actually completed the interview remotely while I was in Honduras back in May, and was accepted as an initiate. The convocation was Saturday evening Oct 4, and even though I did not have to be there in person to receive the title of "fellow", I had asked my partners and the consensus was the experience was worth it to be there in person. So we decided to make the effort.

I was initially disappointed the Congress was in Chicago this year, of all years. I would have liked to explore a new city, but in the end the proximity of Chicago to Indiana was well worth it. While I attended sessions on Sunday and Monday, trying to claim as much CME as possible; Jake was able to drive down to Lafayette area and take care of some business there. Selling the last cub cadet, apostille some documents, pick up the suitcase we left behind, etc.

Layover in San Pedro Sula... power outage at the airport.

While in Chicago, I couldn't find a hotel that was under $300 a night. Thankfully we were able to stay with a friend, yet another blessing of the Congress being in Chicago.

After sleeping in Saturday morning (we had arrived at almost 2am local time) we were able to meet Mom & Dad for lunch on Saturday.

Robed and ready to go! They had so many rules about who could help with the robes, and in reality, there and in person it was pretty much a free-for-all.

Dr. Alex Chudner was one of my co-residents at Westchester. We both became fellows of the ACS 2025.

More Westchester connections! Dr. Muhammad Khan and Dr. Faisal Jehan now surgical oncologists. Dr. Aparna Vancheswaran resident at Westchester but currently in a research year.

Jake and I learned a lesson from this quick little trip. It was good, but it was also too much, too fast and we returned to Honduras more exhausted than before. In the future we'll need to factor an extra day in limbo to have some down time before jumping back into service at the hospital.

Much Love.
