Yo estoy comiendo dulce de pepino relleno con chile.

Right now I have a cucumber candy filled with chile in my mouth. I can't decide whether to go ahead and spit it out or to stick it out and try to get used to Mexican candy.

.......I just spit it out. Chocolate's better for you anyways.

Coming back from Ixtlan. Shabnam and Sung

I am feeling better. Nothing more than a cough now! Hope everyone's valentine's day was as chocolaty and sweet smelling as mine was. God Bless!

Yo estoy enferma.

I've been sick since Friday. I'm getting increasingly bewildered as well as frustrated as my symptoms have progressed from stomach problems, to fever, to sneezing and horrendous cough. Taking an exam on Monday and not being able to think clear enough to even be able to spell my name right; I knew I was in trouble. To top it all off, I'm not able to sleep at night now; I'm too busy sneezing or aching. I'm not a happy camper.

My physiology doctora reminds me of Edna Mode from The Incredibles. It helps me smile in class when calculating membrane potentials to think that I'm listening to Edna Mode instead of Dra. Torres.

On the other hand, Dr. Delgadillo at Santa Anita reminds me of a dark haired Woody Allen. Don't particularly care for the actor, so doesn't exactly help my approval rating of Delgadillo, but it still makes me chuckle to myself at times when I should definitely be paying much closer attention to the proceedings in front of me.

Today at the clinic I was not feeling up to going, but to skip means I have to go two extra days to make it up, so I went. Then of course we have the busiest day yet; 9 patients. i was sniffling pretty often by the end of the 9th. Both Delgadillo and one of the nurses tried to convince me to get myself checked out and a prescription, but of course I refused. With the rollar coaster my health has been on the past few days, my immune system can take care of anything... I think.

Vero's parents drove down a vehicle for her to use. I was really looking forward to not having to drive to Santa Anita this week. Unfortunately, apparently her car needs a new tranmission and now is in the shop so I ended up driving anyways. i think my face registered my disappointment, but I got over it.

It dawned on me the other day that some of the clothes that I wear, not thinking twice about wearing them, are very localized styles, and strickly localized to the Midwest at that. I wear the shirt at home, no one blinks an eye. Here, my Cali classmates (just for example), lean over to me saying 'you're wearing such and such!?!?' which comes across as a combination of 'oh, that's interesting!' and 'hmmm, I wonder what to make of this?' I guess the Midwest has just got style, what can I say!?

Yo estoy esperando para agua.

I have found that sleeping off the floor makes a dramatic change in the temperature. I was sleeping with half the covers that I normally use last night and I still woke up due to being overheated. The floor is cold, now off the floor is too warm. I've got to find a nice in-between.

Last Tuesday at PMC the carnival is still going on in Santa Anita. Thankfully they weren't constantly shooting of fireworks this week though. At a point when no patients were at the clinic the nurses sent us out to go look around. In the plaza in front of the church a band was playing. However, this was no ordinary mariachi band you would typically find in Mexico, this was a concert band. I was shocked! Two songs that I recognized were Hello Dolly! and New York, New York (to which Shabnam and I immediately started a kick line but stopped once we started receiving odd glances from those around us.)

I was reading my Histology text last night and was finally able to enjoy the subject. I had not been excited about it at all due to the fact that none of the professors we've had teaching us have been interesting to me. It's more like I squirm in my seat until the two hours are over and I can stop trying to force myself to listen. I will always say this about UAG; they treat the international students differently but still too much like the Latin students. We've had 4 years of undergrad to develop studying skills unlike the Latin students who are much younger and we don't need so much class time.

Tomorrow I am going to this extravagant birthday party for the daughter of one of my classmates. It's her sweet 16 with a quincenera theme (I don't think you could get more extravagant than that.) This'll be interesting.

I want to go play soccer, but I'm waiting for water to be delivered. Argh!

Yo estoy a casa otra vez.

So I found my way home in the dark! Was a bit nervous starting out, but I just pushed the gas and followed the road and like always the Lord took care of the rest. A few things I discovered about night driving through the Mexican countryside.
1) Mexicans love to use their brights. Sometimes I think they blink them in time to whatever Daddy Yankee song they happen to be listening to at the time.
2) Cops drive with their strobe lights on. Pray you don't get caught behind one; you may just start to seizure.
3) Mexican roads aren't as organized as those in the United States. For example sometimes there is just a wide slab of pavement down and driving is a free-for-all. This is easily done during the day as you can judge the placement of your car by watching the edge of the road in your peripherals. At night that peripheral placement is gone, and for all you know you are driving diagonally across the road into oncoming headlights (whose brights are on of course making you squint further decreasing your current driving ability.)
4) Mexicans love topes (speed bumps). At night topes are harder to see. No I caught no air, but a truck that sped by me as I was crossing one did.
5) I set a goal to make it home in a certain amount of time and I missed it by just 2 minutes. (Alright, the clock changed to 3 minutes just as I pulled into my parking spot, but if it weren't for the topes up my street I would have made it in the 2.)

Today we went to Patzcuaro (I spelled it wrong the other day.) and took a boat to Janitzio (an island in Patzcuaro Lake.)
The Group.
First row: Gloria
Second row: Magi, Laura, Alvaro, Regg, me
Third row: Guille, Issa, Claudia, Lupita, Ana
Fourth row: Nayeli

The island.
The monument on top is of Generalisimo Don Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon

Prayer request: I've got an exam in 8 hours. YIKES!!

Yo estoy en Ixtlan.

Due to complications of internet and electricity availability I have not been able to update as desired, but I finally find myself in Ixtlan for an extended weekend and am now able post.
1) I got a bed!! Yea! I am off the floor. It still feels a bit odd looking at my room from a different angle, and not sinking into the mattress so far that if I don't lay straight my knee hits the floor.
2) In the middle of Nutrition the other day I had a sudden urge for McDonalds and was immediately stuck by the irony of the place and time. It was followed by an urge for Panera in the middle of Histology. One of those passing things I guess.
3) Our class has gone health crazy this semester. Everyone and their roommate has gotten a membership at World's gym or another gym around the city. How do these people have the time to go to a gym?!?! Instead of getting into a taxi to go to a gym, why don't they just run to the gym then run back again? cheaper. less time. good cardio. lowers BMR. burns calories.
4) Horrible news!!! My soccer playing friends are going to get PINK jerseys for us to play in! All I can say is I must really love playing soccer if I'm willing to run around a field in pink.
5) Mexico has a holiday on Monday so there are no classes. The Morelia YG is meeting the Ixtlan YG in Pascua for the holiday. By extension that includes the Guadalajara YG, me!!! Lord knows I need the YG fellowship.
6) In addition to gym memberships, it seems as if everyone is getting a dog! Once again how do these people have time to take care of a dog!?!? They take so much time. I would love to have a dog but wouldn't get one simply because the poor thing would deserve a better owner. Maybe a fish!!!!
7) In addition to soccer, people are getting together to play frisbee on Saturdays! Who needs a gym?!?!

Happy February everyone!
Hasta!
